HOSPITAL, DOCTOR TO PAY $4
MILLION TO SETTLE SUIT
The Register's Iowa News Service
DAVENPORT, IA. - Keokuk Area
Hospital and a doctor have agreed to pay nearly $4 million to a 6-year-old girl
to settle a lawsuit claiming that the defendants failed to diagnose the girl's
meningitis, said Tom Riley, a Cedar Rapids attorney for the girl and her mother.
Dawna Ash, of Wayland, Mo.,
sued the hospital and Dr. Brian Rees, now of California, in federal court in
Davenport.
Ash claimed that her
daughter, April Miller, was misdiagnosed in 1987 in the emergency room of the
hospital as having viral gastroenteritis and that her daughter suffered
neurological injuries resulting in an abnormal walk, Riley said.
Ash and Miller were living in
Keokuk at the time the girl became ill. The hospital had no comment, and Rees
could not be reached.
